Inspiring Women.  Organizational Leaders.  Original Thinkers.  Cultural Creatives.
Movement Builders.  The Heart and Soul of Zonta in the Heartland!

The Zonta District 7 Fall Conference Committee is honored to welcome you to the
historic city of St. Charles, Missouri, the first Capitol city in the state, now celebrating
200 years of civic history.  From the steps of the Old State Capitol Building to the
shores of the Missouri River, this little treasured-filled town boasts a wonderful
working art studio/museum called the The Foundry Art Centre at one end of North Main
Street and the interesting Lewis & Clark Museum at the south end. There is a lot to
see and do here! Take a horse-drawn carriage ride, a trolley ride, or walk, but whatever
the method, you will enjoy the sights and sounds of Main Street!

Embracing the past, and looking towards the future, St. Charles is proud to have a
female mayor, Patti York, who will welcome our District 7 Zontians on Friday night,
September 18 at a banquet dinner not-to-be-missed.  The Zonta Club of St. Charles

WALLY FUNK, one of the original Mercury 13 women, tested for the astronaut program
in the 1960s with aspirations of becoming an astronaut. Her dream coincided perfectly
with America's hope for launching the first person into space. Not only did Wally pass
the rigorous tests, she rated third among the women and even scored higher than
future-astronaut John Glenn. Just before the women were to undergo the final round of
testing, NASA canceled the program without explanation. Amid brewing controversy
and charges of sexual discrimination, the Mercury 13 program ended abruptly. It took
34 years for a woman to finally go into space, and  Wally has received the FAA Gold
Seal as a Flight Instructor and she was the first woman to complete the FAA General
Aviation Operations Inspector Academy course. She became the National
Transportation Safety Board's (NTSB) first female Air Safety Investigator. She has been
extensively written about, and interviewed on MSNBC’s Dateline among other
programs. This is one of the women that paved the way for women astronauts – a real
legend and hero to us all!   THIS IS HUGE NEWS!!!!
